"As a writer myself, I understand well the struggles and mysteries of writing that my clients encounter."

Mary Anne Maier

Editor and Writing Coach

I enjoy working with clients on all aspects of the writing process, from eliciting ideas and developing projects to thinking through tough spots and improving specific elements within a single piece of writing. As a longtime editor for publishers, professionals, and students, I recognize my clients’ expertise and am able to help them enhance the written presentation of their ideas in forms appropriate to their fields of interest, from fiction to technical topics. And as a writer myself, I understand well the struggles and mysteries of writing that my clients encounter.

I am a Phi Beta Kappa who taught college English for nearly a decade and have worked as an independent editor and writer since 1992. I was a university publications editor and have edited academic and trade books for publishers for many years. I’ve been a presenter at national and regional writing conferences, including the Poynter Institute's National Writers' Workshop, and was writer-in-residence for creative nonfiction at the Oklahoma Fall Arts Institute.

Some of my own publications include the literary anthology The Leap Years (see below) and essays and articles in such varied settings as National Public Radio, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Southern Living, anthologies, and the online journal Terrain (June 2004).

Along with my editing of other writers’ works, I’m honored to have collaborated with Joan Shaddox Isom to create our own book, The Leap Years: Women Reflect on Change, Loss, and Love (Beacon Press 1999). This book is a collection of 30 wonderfully eclectic essays by writers—some well known, such as Margaret Atwood and Diane Ackerman, and some who had never published before—who share their honest, funny, and sometimes painful stories of life transitions. As Kirkus Reviews describes the book’s essays: "Often impassioned and profound, many of the writings in this collection are captivating.” Collecting and editing these extraordinary essays, as well as writing my own essays for this and other publications, reminds me of the remarkable diversity of voices and styles that make writing such a powerful tool and, at times, such a joyous gift.
